Information for Students



Required materials for ALL students:


M.A. Reichert: 7 daily exercises for flute

Marcel Moyse: de la sonorite

Thomas Filas: 90 top register studies

Taffanel/Gaubert: 17 Grands Excercices Journaliers de Méchanisme


Other materials will be assigned, as appropriate for individual students.


Scale requirements (to be memorized):


First Semester

Chromatic scales

All major and minor scales (all forms)

All major and minor triads


Second Semester

Chromatic scales

All major and minor scales (all forms)

All major, minor, augmented, and diminished triads

Whole-tone scales


Third Semester

Chromatic scales

All major and minor scales (all forms)

All major, minor, augmented, and diminished triads

Whole-tone scales

Taffanel/Gaubert Nos. 1, 2 and 4

All dominant seventh chords


Fourth Semester

Chromatic scales

All major and minor scales (all forms)

All major, minor, augmented, and diminished triads

Whole-tone scales

Taffanel/Gaubert Nos. 1, 2 , 4, and 12

All dominant seventh chords

All major scales in thirds


Subsequent Semesters:

All scale patterns learned will be cumulative. SCALE EXAMS will be required each semester for ALL students, regardless of level or year in school. Graduate students’ requirements will vary, depending upon years in the studio and prior experience. Requirements for subsequent semesters (after the initial four) will depend upon level of the student. Some of these patterns are listed below, but are not limited to these.
